The Way to True Happiness when you Feel Down
Are you happy? I mean really truly happy? As much as we would love to, in fact, no-one is in a high state of happiness all the time. We all have our ups and downs in life. If you currently face more downs than ups, this blog post could help you find the way to true happiness.
This is the first blog of a series that will go deeper into the subject. What can you expect to read here?
- What is happiness?
- Temporary happiness and the need for change
- Happiness is not a destination, it’s a journey
- Nurture and exercise happiness like a muscle
- Good principles influence happiness
What is happiness?
First of all, I would like you to think about the things that make you happy. I don’t mean the things that are supposed to make you happy. Rather, the things that give you a nice feeling varying from satisfaction, fulfillment, and well-being to pleasure, joy, and delight. These are all different aspects or degrees of happiness.
To be in a state of happiness you don’t have to feel all of them at the same time. For example, you can have a feeling of satisfaction after accomplishing a task, without feeling delighted about it. Or you can look forward to an event with excitement, but without feeling fulfilled.
So if you’re having troubles feeling happy overall, break your happiness down into these different aspects. To start with, focus on the ones you can still experience. Mostly it will be the ones on the lower frequencies like satisfaction or fulfillment.
It will reinforce your belief you can still be happy in some ways. When you also bring change to some areas of your life, that belief will grow with experience.
True happiness is also described differently by different people. It’s interesting to read the quotes of what some of them say what true happiness means to them. It can inspire you.
Temporary happiness and the need for change
An ingredient of happiness is certainly having good goals. Is there a project you are working on? Or maybe you’re trying to find a better job or want to buy a new car. Reaching your goals and getting hold of something you really wanted to have, can be both sources of TEMPORARY happiness.
Why did I stress ‘temporary’? Because that’s what it is. It’s not the way to true happiness. A while after you reached that goal or have that new car, other desires will come up. In fact… they will never stop popping up! It’s our human nature to keep looking for new things or change.
Look around you in nature. Everything is changing constantly. As we are a part of creation, we were not made to live a static boring life! However, that doesn’t mean you have to look for new things or change each day of course. But it means you won’t feel the same level of happiness after you have that car for 10 years.
Happiness is a journey
For sure, getting happiness only out of buying new things will lead to disappointment. That feeling will soon fade away. It’s also an expensive way to look for happiness. Don’t think that people who can afford to buy new things all the time are therefore happier. For them, it became something ordinary that doesn’t excite them that much anymore.
What’s the takeaway here? Don’t say: “I will be happy if I’ll get this thing or reach that goal”. When you think that way, you’re procrastinating on your happiness.
Keep this in mind:
HAPPINESS IS NOT A DESTINATION, IT’S A JOURNEY.
Nurture and exercise happiness
Now let’s see how you can influence your overall state of happiness. Let us compare it with taking care of your health. Will you have a good healthy body if you feed it daily with junk food and rarely exercise? Of course not!
Likewise with your degree of happiness. It needs to be nurtured and exercised like a muscle. How? By the choices you make and the way you live. That way happiness will not be something that comes and goes. It will rather be overall present in your life varying from a lower level of satisfaction to the higher level of intense joy.
Good principles influence happiness
Having good principles in life and applying them is also a must! What principles can help you be happier? In short, some of them are:
1. Have good goals in life
2. Practice giving
3. Be grateful
5. Give and receive love
6. Take care of your body and health
7. Adapt when necessary
In conclusion, there are some fundamental and universal principles enclosed here. In the next blogs, I will expand on some of them.
